SPRINGINESS…Is that a word?  I’m pretty sure it’s not.

Spring is busting out all over.  I love it!  Soon, it will be time to plant my garden, and start tending outdoor plants.  The chives in my garden from last year made it through the winter, and are looking spectacular – nice dark green, and LOTS of them.

My bluebells look good, too.  They won’t bloom for a while still, but they are poking up their leaves to soak up some sun.

I have more flowers now, too.  I have lots of daffodils, lots and LOTS of grape hyacinths, and some new ones.  I had one tiny little red tulip (my finger is in the picture for scale).  I also have some real hyacinth buds.  They are about 3 days away from blooming, though.

Here is my abundance of grape hyacinths.  Many more than last year.  I offer an artsy photo of them, taken by Rich on March 14th:

Last week, I did a BUNCH of re-potting.  Lots of my plants were more than ready for bigger pots, and a lot were ready for fresh dirt, after years of living in the same dirt.  Here are some of the plants I transplanted.

Aloe ‘Lizard Lips’, and Aloe ‘Pepe’. ‘Pepe’ isn’t looking very good.  I am a little worried about it.  It is a strange orangey-brown color in the middle of its rosette. :(

My two Fockea edulis plants.  The first of the two I have had for about 8 years.  It is far smaller than it probably should be for that length of time, but I don’t mind.  It is very healthy, just a bit stunted.  It got a bigger pot.  It’s now up to a 7 1/2 inch pot.  The second I have had about 3 years.  It is still fine in the pot it’s in – just needed some new dirt.

My only Adenium obesum got a new pot.  I won this plant in a drawing at the San Diego Cactus & Succulent Society meeting last August.  It seems healthy, but definitely needed a new pot!  I am sure it is grateful.

This is Ferocactus gracilis.  I got it at a cactus ranch in SoCal last August.  It was crammed into a teeny pot, and was almost literally screaming for a new one.  Now it is in a reasonably-sized pot, and hopefully will do lots of growing this season!

Thanks, everyone, for stopping by and sharing in my spring happiness!

P.S.  Here’s another bird for your enjoyment…an adult male white-crowned sparrow:

  • Jen:

Hey Katie…It was rainy all day today, so I am very jealous of the weather you’re reporting! The little bird is so cute – he looks like a little fatty! :)

  • Sonja:

Fear and guilt, two of the essentials in raising children, have hit me while looking at your plant photos. I have so many that need repotting and more TLC. Mr. White-crowned Sparrow is very cute.

  • Uncle Tom:

    Cactii Katii,
It’s always nice to see the start of spring. It looks like you have a headstart on the East Coast. Will be looking for more pictures. Love, Tom and Susie

  • Lorraine:

Hi Katie. Daffodils still not blooming here in the NE. Crocus still are. I am hoping my winter hardy Gardenia makes it. So far so good. It still has green leaves.

    Katie,
It’s looking good up there. I’m registering 93F at 13:52 in the backyard. The backyard is a wildflower bouquet and lots of the C&S are showing their colors too.
    Well, back to repotting.

  • Janet:

Hooray spring! I’m just glad for warm sun. Our snow is finally melting away and green is trying to take its place.

  • Richard E. Schwaiger:

Boy oh boy I wish spring was breaking out here in Philadelphia. Today it was suposed to go up to 65, however with the wind it seems like 40, oh well I guess spring will be here soon enough, or will it go right into summer, who knows I have been here long enough to know that this is Philly weather.

Hi, all. I am so incredibly happy that spring is here!

Jen – That little bird IS a fatty. He hangs out with all these skinny little finches, and the looks like a 747 next to them.

Sonja (AKA ‘mom’) – Not sure about the fear and guilt, but yes, the sparrow is cute, and repotting, like death and taxes, is inevitable…or nearly so.

Uncle Tom & Aunt Susie – I have heard the east coast is way behind. That’s too bad. Spring is wonderful!

Lorraine – Crocuses are nice, too…

Ed – I am glad to hear that the cacti are blooming. That means we will have lots to see when we are in Phoenix (and Tucson) at the end of the month!

Janet – I am SO glad to hear it’s finally warming up there, too! Sometimes it really seems like winter will NEVER end!

Rich – Yup – spring WILL come. Someday. It was super windy here last week. It must’ve finally reached you!

    Thanks for visiting, everyone!

  • Amy:

I bet your plants are so happy for being repotted!

We have signs of spring, but they’re tough to find in all that rain….

  • Doug in CT:

That is some impressive display of cactii and flowers and such. The big question I have after seeing your handsome feathered friend sadly sitting there without his mate is this…why did you drop that freshly potted plant on her poor fluffy bird body? :)

  • Kiri:

Beautiful springtime shots! Thank you for sharing! I’ve been meaning to go out and plant some flowers in my front yard… you may have motivated me to do it this weekend. :)

  • Wow! You mentioned the tulip when we were talking gardening, but I can’t believe how tiny it is! So cute!

  • cactuskate:

Amy – I am sorry it’s still so rainy in your corner of the world. If it’s any consolation, about mid-June here everything turns brown again, and prepares for the harshness of a 105°+ summer, while I am sure you will be enjoying a lush, warm summer! :D

Doug – I am happy to have the flowers! The rest of your comment – very alliterative, but a bit sad… :(

Kiri – I hope it DID motivate you to plant some flowers! You have a great climate for CACTUS, incidentally…he he he

Caryn – Yes, that tulip was beyond tiny, and only lasted for one day. I now have a few regular-sized tulips. One yellow one, and 2 red ones. They are few, but welcome!
