On June 26th, I shaved Mindy. This is a yearly ritual in which I remove 3 dogs’ worth of fur from my one small dog. To say that this is NOT Mindy’s favorite activity is a major understatement.
To shave a furry dog like Mindy, you must first cut off most of the fur with scissors. I think she likes this less than the actual shaving. You would not believe how much fur can grow on such a small dog! Here is a before shot, so you can see my furry little beast:
Rich happened to be in the yard taking pictures when I finished the scissors portion of the clipping, and he got a shot of her between scissoring and shaving.
I didn’t get any pictures of me actually shaving her. She barely holds still and submits to the shaving…I didn’t want to add insult to injury, and photograph her misery. However, here are some shots from after it was over. She was well rewarded for her patience, and was so much happier and cooler!
Good dog.

She’s probably really enjoying her new coif. Good job.
She looks beautiful Katie! We finally ordered some clippers for Frances & Scratchy. They should hopefully be here this week.
OH! Poppy and Lily would be fun to shave. Papillons, ya know, Lily screams when you need to cut a burr our of her coat! 114 F yesterday and they waited under the Grapefruit tree for 2 hours hoping a lizard would leave it’s hole-to no avail of course.
It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it! I’m sure she thanks you for making her cooler! Woody hates clippers or scissors…even a brush! You’d think someone beat him as a pup! :O Mindy’s a cutie!
Mindy looks lovely in her summer ‘do! I’m thinking about a trip to Moab at the end of this month. Be in touch when you have time. Hope your summer is going well!
She maybe feeling better without the fur but she was a sight for all ages to enjoy when she got wet with the fur on, that’s for certain.
Great pictures, that never worked out with cats i had LOL.
Your dog is nekkid. That’s a great way to spend summer in the desert.
Mindy thanks you all for the kind words about her new ‘do.
Sonja (AKA ‘mom’) – Yes, I am sure she does. She just doesn’t enjoy the process. Poor baby.
Dana – Thanks! This is the best job I have done. This is the 3rd time I have done it (I think), and I am getting better at it.
Ed – Mindy isn’t THAT bad, but she does NOT love it. She does yipe when I have to shave her legs, for some reason.
Rosemarie – Mindy is the same way. She acts like someone beat her frequently, but we’ve had her since she was a baby, and she is not nearly as abused as she lets on.
Jen – Can’t wait to see you! You will love Mindy’s ‘do. Her nice short fur is lovely, and nicer to pet now!
Chris – Yes, she was! She has little skinny rat legs under all the fur when she’s wet!
Uncle Rich – Yeah, I could see cats being a bit harder to shave. Down the street from my friend Audrey’s house when we were kids, there were some people who shaved their cat. I remember feeling bad for the poor thing!
Janet – I couldn’t agree more. That becomes difficult with kids in the house, though.
Well done! She looks great with her summer trim. Although she can’t thank you in words, I’m sure she’s grateful. I love the last pic when the bone is hanging out the side of her mouth.
