Hi, ‘blog fans.  Cactus Kate here, reporting live from sunny southern California.  I am here for quite a while this year, so I should be bothering you several times from my ‘blog.

Yesterday (July 29), I drove from Moab, UT to Santa Clarita, CA.  Chris and I crossed the hot Mojave desert in one day, in about a 12 hour drive.  I dropped him off at his mom’s house, and then drove another hour to Santa Clarita (Saugus), where my friend Barb lives, and where I am staying.

When we drove through Baker, CA, I had fully intended to take a picture of the ‘World’s Tallest Thermometer’ – but it seems this Guinness-certified landmark is BUSTED at the moment.  It was not telling the temperature.  I was disappointed.  I really WAS curious what the temperature was there, too.  It’s ALWAYS hot.

I arrived at Barb’s house at about 6:30pm, after battling one of my favorite traffic interchanges in the world…the westbound 210 freeway joining the northbound 5 freeway.  UGH.  This particular interchange is ugly at 3:00am on Sundays.  I have never driven into this one when it hasn’t been horrible.  Here is a picture I took with my phone, as I sat stopped in the crappy traffic:

After this harrowing experience (really, on a good day, you only spend about 10 minutes on the 5 en route to Barb’s house), I arrived, and we immediately went out for sushi.  Sushi is something that I seldom get, and I look forward to it IMMENSELY.  We went to Shogun sushi, which is less than a mile from Barb’s house.  Honestly, I have to say, I like Shogun sushi better than any others I have had there.  Here is Barb at Shogun:

We ordered the Red Dragon roll (2), which is a favorite.  We also got the Crunch Roll, a Mexican Roll, a Hawaiian Roll, and white tuna sushi.  Below are pictures of these, plus an inside look at the Red Dragon and Crunch Rolls.

After that, we went home, chatted for a while, and went to bed.  I was exhausted.

Today (July 30), I got up late, and went with Barb’s mom to the recycling place just outside of Ralph’s supermarket.  I had brought lots of crushed aluminum cans from Moab, just to see if it was monetarily worthwhile to do it.  It was.  The lady there informed me I had brought 78 lbs of cans in, and I got $114.30 for them.  That is quite a bit more money than I had hoped for, and I have decided it is definitely worthwhile to save cans.  BIG thanks to Todd & Dana, and to my mom and dad for saving cans for me!  I will definitely be doing it again!  Here are some pictures from the recycling effort:

I went to meet Barb for lunch.  We had lunch at Geisha sushi, which is just across the street from where she works.  Their sushi is good, but not as good as Shogun.  However, I do have to give Geisha an A for presentation. Today, we had a Geisha Roll (described in the menu as: Baked baby lobster with baby lobster on top, wrapped in soy paper), a Dynamite Roll (described in the menu as: Deep-fried crab, cucumber, avocado with sauteed vegetable, scallop, special sauce), a Roller Coaster Roll (desc. in the menu as: Spicy tuna with white tuna, avocado), Mushroom Special (Desc. in menu as: Deep-fried spicy tuna rolled on mushroom with Mozzarella cheese, chef’s special sauce), and a spicy shrimp and crab roll.  They were all good.  Also, there is a picture of a lemon garnish from one of the plates.  I took this picture for my mom.  I know she would have liked to see the lemon swan-thing.  Here they are:

That’s about it for today.  We just relaxed the rest of the day. Thanks for reading, and please come back soon!  There will be more SoCal fun, I promise!

P.S.  Only in California do you see GIANT healthy date palms on the backs of semis being transported to new homes.

    WELCOME!!
Glad you made it to SoCal! Will get down to see you guys soon. And, of course, you (and Barb) are welcome to come visit me in Hell…er…Victorville lol. I have a swampy now, so all is good…and cool. Ahhh…the Baker thermometer. A regular disappointment to so many who pass through. I’m not even sure that thing EVER works any more. Honestly, I never even notice when I drive through.

    See ya soon! :-D

  • Hillary:

Dude I think you should have snapped a pic of the thermometer, broken or not. I recall that thing, and I recall Baker being toasty. Love the date palm. Do you by any chance have a hot black top with some gold accents? I could really use one for my disco outfits, it’s a sparkle motion weekend. Ah well. ENJOY SUMMER VACATION!!! Yah! Oh, and could you go check out west hollywood for me and see if it really is a foxy lesbian hotspot?

  • Sonja:

Buongiorno!(read with enthusiasm) Wow! It definitely pays to save cans. Nice haul.
Oh, if I could only be there for that lovely food. Thanks for the lemon swan photo. There are so many challenges in this world. My talents extend only to scallion frills. Enjoy!

  • Dana Cramblett:

Holy crap! $114.30!!!! That is so awesome! Obviously, you made all the cans fit. Did you have to bury Chris in cans on the way there? I am so jealous of all the sushi you’ve had so far. I wanted to eat some in Crested Butte, but don’t have the time today. Have a great weekend there & I look forward to more posts.

  • Lorraine:

Ohmygosh that’s a lot of cans! Good for you. You deserved the $ after hauling them such a distance. Ah good old Southern California. I remember driving my uncle’s pink cadallac from Woodland Hills, through topango Canyon drive to Malibu beach. I really thought I was something. HaHa. Haven’t been back in 40 years. I bet I wouldn’t recognize anything.

Have a great time. Can’t wait to hear the next chapter of your stay.

  • Rebecca:

Yes, I’ve missed you in Moab once again! I hope you have a great time in CA. The sushi looks amazing and is making me hungry. Very photogenic as well!

  • Janet Israel:

Yay for recycling! Our free drop off sight decided to close for awhile so they could move or something. When we finally got to take stuff in, we had 2 truck loads. I’m still waiting to sell the aluminum. I’m glad you get your sushi fix. Come hang out on your way back to Moab to get you Janet fix.

  • cactuskate:

    Thanks for visiting, everyone!

Robyn – I definitely want to see you while you are here! I am glad to hear Swampo Nuevo is working! Woo Hoo!

Hillary – actually…I DO have a black sparkly disco-y top, and it’s from a long-gone day when I was smaller, so you can probably have it. However, you will have to wait until I get home, because I will have to dig to find it.

Sonja (AKA ‘mom’) – I wish you could have some of the food too. It’s excellent!

Dana – I am SO excited to be near good food! You should MAKE some time to have sushi! It doesn’t take long…he he he.

Lorraine – That’s a beautiful area. Rich and I did that drive once.

Becky – I will see you next time you come to Moab – I WILL.

Janet – I will be there Aug. 17th, sometime in the evening. I will call you about it. See you soon!

    Hi Katie,

    California Dreaming….

recycling- good for you and profitable too!
A poet in the making, hmmm, maybe I’ll compose some more…

Does Utah not have a recycling program?

    I wish I liked sushi but……..

    Safe drive home.

    Love Lesley

  • Jürgen:

Good to hear you are near:-)
What about coming a little further south next Saturday seeing us and attending the SDCSS meeting?

    http://www.sdcss.com/

    Enjoy your stay in CA!

    Jürgen

  • Glad you’re having a good time and getting some good food there, too. I had no idea aluminum cans were worth so much. Wish you’d let me know you still wanted some; we’ve been recycling all of ours. (Not that we get that many.)

  • Kiri:

The thermometer isn’t as exciting as you think — it only shows temperature in increments of 10 degrees (as I recall). Disappointing! What’s much cooler is your recycled can profit — wow! How long did it take you to accumulate so many?

By the way, this blog post just showed up my reader today! I think my reader is broken. :(
